Rio+20: Are the oceans sinking? New impluses for the international protection of the sea
Live broadcast
There is seemingly no end to the bad news related to the condition of our planet’s oceans. It is evident that the countless attempts to protect the oceans from overuse and pollution have not yet brought about the desired and necessary success. At the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro crucial international agreements were made. These concerned primarily measures to protect and sustainably use the biological diversity, to protect the climate and to stem the expansion of deserts. However the paradigm shift, which Rio92 marked with the message of sustainable development, did not extend to the protection of the sea.
